Hideaway Key

We all know I have an obession with Pinterest, I love the possibilities! I have even had a couple of my items on there! Whoo hoo what an honor! Seriously, it makes me super excited.  I ran across this idea for an inexpensive home made hideaway key and was smitten.

The best part was I had a ton of the supplies needed and it would only cost me about twenty minutes of my time, mainly because I wanted to find the perfect spot to hide the key!

Finished Product!

You simply need a medicine bottle, a rock and some glue! Just have to love those kind of craft projects!  I made two, one for the front and one for the back of the house. I have actually been thinking about making one more for the garage.

I started with two medicine bottles, and removed the labels! Just soak in hot water for a few minutes if you have any left over residue.

Once the bottles are clean, remove the lids. I colored mine black to help them blend in a little better with the ground; if you have a big enough rock, I am sure you could get away without coloring them. We tried brown at first but it was not the right shade and in our minds was way too obvious.

they look kind of funny don't they!
To color the lids, we just used a sharpie marker and colored away. Let it dry before moving to the next step. Once the lids were dry we picked out rocks that covered the majority of the lid and blended in with our yard the best.

Using a jar of rocks, I got at Target on Clearance awhile back, for like four dollars or something like that, it has been awhile!

jar of rocks, therewas so many in there that the two I took, didn't even make a dent!

Next we hot glued the rock to the lid and let it dry!

and Mr. Barefoot laughs at me for saving the medication bottles!

Woo hoo, two key hideaways for about $.10 total.  Medicine bottles came with medication, glue already had on hand, and the rocks on hand as well.

Add your key and find the spot to bury the bottle. We tried it one of two ways, one we dug a hole that was just perfect to pull the lid off and get the key out, and the other to pull the entire bottle. After a week or so, we figured out it was easier to just remove the lid to get out the key, the bottle part stayed securly in the ground!

Now, that I showed you how we hid our keys, don't come looking to enter our house, actually I think I am going to move them just to be safe! :)
